How this system works
Since 1959 the international yard has been defined as exactly 0.9144 metres, which locks the inch at 25.4 millimetres. Nautical miles stay tied to the Earth: one nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres. US survey units were retired for most federal work in 2023, so Fathom uses the international foot throughout.
Base unit: metre. Metre is SI; Foot is US customary.
