About
A converter that keeps the systems straight.
Fathom is a free online unit converter for the messy reality of measurement: not just “metric versus imperial”, but US customary versus UK imperial, SI versus CGS, decimal versus binary prefixes, and a few scales that only historians and specialists still touch. The site is published by Upcott Studios.
Every linear conversion goes through a single base quantity (the metre, the kilogram, the second, the pascal…). Temperature uses an affine map onto kelvin. Fuel economy treats consumption units as reciprocals of efficiency units, which is why 10 L/100 km is not ten times 1 mpg.
Factors follow the International Yard and Pound Agreement (1959), the SI brochure, NIST SP 811, and the IEC binary prefixes. Where a unit is defined exactly, the result is marked exact. Where it is conventional (Mach at sea level, a cubit, a pinch), the converter is honest about that.
A fathom is six feet of sounding line — a unit, and a word for understanding. That is the whole product.
